Along the Kochi-Madurai highway is a well-known tourist destination called Cheeyappara Falls. Many waterfalls, including the 1,000-foot-tall Cheeyappara Falls, feed the Periyar River, which rises in the Western Ghats. Standing at a distance, in awe of the sheer strength of the waterfalls is one option, the other being an opportunity to cool off in the pool created below by the waterfall's tumbling descent through several rocky tiers.
Trekking and other outdoor activities are popular in this area. Numerous plant and animal species can be found here, protected by the dense forest. The lush valley on the opposite side provides a jaw-droppingly spectacular view. The waterfall can still be reached from the highway despite the thick foliage.
Scheduled mountaineering and rock climbing activities are held in addition to trekking at the Cheeyappara Waterfalls. While the waterfalls at Kerala's Cheeyappara are enjoyable at any time of the year, the winter and monsoon seasons are the best.
