Elephants and tigers are safe in the dense Periyar National Park, tucked away high in the Western Ghat mountain ranges. Periyar's deep valleys are covered in a canopy of tropical evergreen trees that keep daylight out. The inhabitants of the sanctuary emerge from the swampy grasslands along the edge of the lake to quench their thirst.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many species of butterflies, birds, reptiles, amphibians, innumerable mammals and fish. Wild pigs, boar, deer - sambar, gaur, mouse and barking, apart from majestic tigers and Indian wild dogs, are found here. The exotic lion-tailed macaque is one of the four main primates found at the sanctuary apart from the elusive and endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Also known as the Nilgiri ibex, it is endemic to the region and is known to survive in cold as well as tropical areas.
There are many ways to appreciate the sanctuary's wild landscape. Choose from a jeep safari, to elephant safari, bamboo rafting and the ever-popular boat safari along the Periyar.
